Way back when early physicians were first identifying anatomic structures, abnormalities, and functions, they realized a need to have an organized classification system. With so many words being added to the lexicon, setting in place a formalized, structured methodology for the naming process became necessary. Given that physicians were scattered across a wide geographic area and communication was slow and unreliable, early physicians needed to implement a system that would prevent things from being named multiple times, or named inconsistently. Try to imagine keeping track of the same item in several different languages. The father of medical terminology is the father of modern medicine himself, Hippocrates.
